Diary #2

In the past few years, I have been unable to continue my diary because I have been living an extremely tiresome life, day by day. Shanghai has changed drastically over the few years. The Battle of Songhu is finally over, and the Japanese had finally taken over the entire city of Shanghai, guarding every corner of the streets of Shanghai. Only the remains of the structure of buildings shows a trace of war in Shanghai. However, after a recent incident of Japanese bombings at Pearl Harbor the war seems to finally head to the end.

I work for even longer hours now, as more ships from Japan enter the port of Shanghai. Though I have sent my family loads of money over the years, I have not yet heard from them. I'm afraid that it is the Japanese who took the money away as they inspected my envelope.

I have recently been furious to find out that my daughter and my wife has been sent to different concentration camps. I feel so guilty for not being there for them, and also is extremely worried about what would come for my daughter and wife. I hope my son, Ma Sheng Xun, is at least safe in Hong Kong. I want to flee Shanghai as soon as my work ends. I have been away from my family for 4 years, and I truly, dearly miss them. I do not even know what I’m writing right now, because I’m extremely saddened by the news of my daughter and wife. When Nanjing is safe enough to go back, I’ll take the first train to Nanjing, find my wife and daughter and flee to Hong Kong to get Ma Sheng Xun. I want my family back.
